Podemos proposes a progressive electricity rate to Ribera and taxing private jets and yachts

Podemos has sent the Minister of Ecological Transition, Theresa Rivera, a document with a dozen proposals to save energy and lower the electricity bill. The spokesman for the purples in Congress, Paul Echeniquehas attended this Thursday a meeting convened by the third vice-president to start negotiating the Contingency Plan that Spain will have to send to the European Commission before the end of September. We can propose to establish a progressive electricity bill and a tax on private planes, yachts and high-capacity cars.

In the first meeting called by Ribera with the groups to start the conversations with a view to new energy saving measures, the purples have presented more than a dozen proposals. Purple party supplies have put the accent on creating a progressive electricity bill model, in which those who consume less pay less. The intention, they explain, is that the kilowatt is more expensive for those people who spend more, in an attempt to reduce their consumption.

In this approach, Echenique has pointed out that it is unfair that the price per KWh is the same for a family that heats an 80-meter home than for someone who spends much more because they have a 500-meter home. “People who have more also have a larger carbon footprint and spend more energy“, he explained. However, following this line of argument, the purples point out that this measure would not apply to the industrial or commercial sector and that it would only be for domestic bills.

Another of the measures that they intend to include in the document that must be sent to the European Union with more ambitious measures to continue reducing gas consumption in the face of its possible shortage in autumn and winter is to establish a “green tax” through a rise in taxes that affect the registration of private planes, recreational boats of a certain size and large displacement cars.

In the document sent to Ecological Transition, the purples point out that in Spain it is estimated that green taxes account for 1.8% of GDP compared to a level in Europe of 2.5% on average. In this sense, they also propose to reform the personal income tax contemplating deductions that encourage sustainable mobility or sustainable forest management. On the other hand, they propose creating incentives for neighboring communities to present audits and energy saving plans.

The purple ones also include among their proposals a financing fund so that the municipalities finance 100% the installation of solar panels in lower middle income housing buildings or grants to eliminate natural gas installations. Regarding transport, Podemos insists on establishing subscriptions of 10 euros.
