Ronald Hoop enjoyed playing at Telstar for four years. The regional derbies against AZ and HFC Haarlem in particular remain in his memory. “Those were good times,” says Hoop.
Bus pelted with stones
Later in his career, Hoop also played for Palermo. At the club from Sicily he was brought in with much fanfare as the ‘black Marco van Basten.’ He did not play much there, but he always remembered the match he won against arch-rival Catania.
“That was terrible. All the curtains in the bus were closed and then the bus was pelted with stones. Those were huge stones. Then you were shocked for a moment,” said Hoop.
