Former Bundesliga professional Eljero Elia officially announced the end of his career in a TV show. The 36-year-old was under contract with ADO Den Haag until last summer and has been without a club since then. “I’ve retired from football,” said the 30-time Dutch international at “ESPN“. “I’m very busy, didn’t even have time to announce it: that’s the moment when the whole Netherlands knows that I’ve stopped playing football,” continued Elia, who played a total of 118 games for the Netherlands during his career Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen (11 goals, 18 assists).

Overall, the former left winger can look back on ten professional positions in his home country, Germany, Italy, England and Turkey. Elia played the most games for Basaksehir FK (86). He won the Süper Lig title with the club in 2019/20, and the offensive power’s title collection also includes an Italian championship with Juventus Turin (2011/12) and a championship and cup win in the Netherlands with Feyenoord. “In my mind, I had stopped for a few years. I really didn’t like it in the last few years,” said Elia, who played for Elftal in six games at the 2010 World Cup, including the final they lost to Spain. His highest market value of 17 million euros dates from the time at Hamburger SV (to market value development).
