The search took a long time. But now the Lower Saxony team has found a new sports director. He already worked for FC Bayern – and played in the Bundesliga for many years.

VfL Wolfsburg has filled a key position: Pirmin Schwegler is moving from Eintracht Frankfurt to the Bundesliga club and taking on the role of sports director. The club announced this on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old succeeds Sebastian Schindzielorz, who was released about a month ago. Schwegler said of the decision: “The decision to leave Eintracht was by no means easy for me.” At the same time, “the chance to take on a central role at an ambitious club is a very attractive prospect for me.”

At Eintracht, Schwegler most recently worked as head of professional football in the team led by sports director Markus Krösche and sports director Timmo Hardung. The former SGE captain previously worked for FC Bayern and TSG Hoffenheim. According to information from Sky, Wolfsburg will pay a transfer fee of around 500,000 euros for the move.

Krösche said: “Pirmin Schwegler has done a very good job in the last twelve months. We would have been very happy to continue on this path together. His experience in football and his qualities have aroused short-term interest in Wolfsburg, where he can take on what he finds to be an exciting challenge. We don’t want to put any obstacles in Pirmin’s way for this opportunity.”

Wolfsburg parted ways with both coach Paul Simonis and Schindzielorz in mid-November in the wake of the sporting crisis. Andreas Schicker, initially considered a candidate for the position, ultimately stayed at TSG Hoffenheim.
