THESolo di Pianosa (Livorno), May 29. (askanews) – In the frame of the European Week of Parks, Uno (Man, Nature, Environment) and Federparchi Foundation, presented the first results on the reintegration of the Barbagianni on the island of Pianosa, started in 2023 with the contribution of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park Authority. The species had no longer been detected in this area in a stable way after the eradication of the black rat, one of its main food sources. The Barbagianni does not build a real nest and therefore uses the abandoned spaces of the former prison.

The Barbagianni returns to the island of Pianosa

The faunaist Vincenzo Rizzo Pinna who deals with monitoring in concrete terms: “This animal is a night rapacious that fulfills an important ecological role in the regulation of ecosystems inhabited by its prey, by micromammiferi. Understanding what a barbagianni who leads his life on a certain territory is food, allows us to analyze a real census of all those who are his prey.

Four individuals of the Italian population have been reintroduced, from centers of recovery of wildlife. The Barbagianni has returned to nestly nest on the island. The project is part of the initiatives promoted at national level by Uno Foundation and Federparchi, including the “Biodiversity in flight” program.

Renata Braino, president of the Scientifco Committee Foundation Uno: “We strongly wanted to support it together with Federparchi with whom we have been collaborating for some time to demonstrate that nature also needs human intervention, above all where in the past as on the island of Pianosa, but last year we were on the island Gallinara, there were human interventions that somehow changed those who were the natural structures”

The collaboration with Fondazione Uno and Federparchi combines two worlds with similar and parallel objectives. Corrado Teofili, head of Cets and biodiversity of Federparchi: “Federparchi specifically deals with protected areas, UNO Foundation deals with the conservation of nature and the environment, both participate, for example, together, being both members in the IUCN, the world union for the conservation of nature, of which Federparchi is responsible for the management of the secretariat of the Italian Committee”.

An articulated work table will continue until the end of 2025, with further monitoring sessions, with the aim of consolidating the stable presence of the species on the island and promoting a harmonious coexistence between man, nature and environment.
