THEChoice of May 1st as a date for the workers’ party has deep roots. In 1886, in Chicago, thousands of workers took strike to claim the application of the law on eight hours and better working conditions. The protests degenerated into violent clashes with the police, which culminated in the Tragic massacre of Haymarket Square. The same year, however, thanks to the continuous pressures of the American Association of Knights of Labor (Knights of Labor), it came approved the first law that limited the working day to eight hours. This historical conquest entered into vigor the following year, precisely on May 1stbecoming the symbol of the struggle for more fair and dignified working conditions.

Today, the Workers’ Festival is an opportunity to remember the achievements obtained Thanks to the trade union struggles and to renew the commitment in the defense of workers’ rights. It is also one day to reflect on the challenges that we still have to face, such as the precariousness of work, social inequalities and globalization.
