THEMmagina to live forever in the dark and in silence: it is the condition that in Italy concerns Over 360 thousand sordocieche people and with psychosensory multidisibility, isolated from the world, a world that often completely ignores their rights and their own existence. Also to maintain attention on this condition, in 2018 the International Day of People with Sordocence (June 27), on impulse of organizations such as the Lega del Filo d’Oro Foundationfor 60 years of reference point for sordocieche and with psychosensory multidisibility in Italy.
People with a deafness: 360 thousand invisible ask for inclusion
Sordocieche and with multidishability psychosensory people often remain invisible in the eyes of society. Without specialized interpreters cannot go to the hospital, Without adequate educational programs, they are excluded from the school path and without inclusive policies they remain cut off from the world of work. Psychosensorial deafness and pluridisibility are over 360 thousand in Italy, equal to 0.7% of the population; But sensitivity on the topic is increasing and the number of those who choose to support the entities that deal with “assistance to people with motor, cognitive and sensory disabilities” is growing.
Still partial knowledge, but sensitivity grows among the Italians
An investigation of‘Astraricerche Institutemade in June 2025 for the League of Golden Film, reveals that only 58.9% of Italians know that the deafness can be acquired throughout life, while almost one in five erroneously considers it a rare disability. However, awareness grows: support for people with motor, cognitive and sensory disabilities went from 9.4% in 2016 to 16.4% in 2025. The notoriety of the Lega del Filo d’Oro also climbed from 31% to 46.2% in the same period.
People with deafenance: the manifesto asking for concrete answers
In March 2024, in the Chamber of Deputies, the Lega del Filo d’Oro presented the manifesto of deaf down people, a document that urges a commitment of the institutions to promote the full recognition of the rights of those who do not see and do not feel. School inclusion, autonomous mobility, access to places of culture and work: essential conditions for a dignified life.

Sixty years of battles for a recognition full of rights
Since its foundation, the Lega del Filo d’Oro is committed to the full recognition of the rights of deafocieche people. In particular, many efforts were conducted so that the process for the revision and full application of Law 107/2010 was not stopped on the recognition of the deafness as a unique and specific disability. A decisive step arrived in 2024 with the approval of the “simplificazioni-bis” bill approval, which expands the definition of deafness also including the conditions acquired, regardless of the onset age. This regulatory turn opens the way for full health, school and social inclusion.
The hope now awaits the definitive approval in Parliament, to finally give justice and recognition to those who live a double disability and has too often been forgotten.
