You may have seen the name Hans Buls pass by in other places. Buls is a recognized weather photographer who also sends his photos to other media. His works can not only be seen on TV Drenthe, but also on national television and popular weather sites, for example.

“I send a photo almost every day. It is a big hobby for me, almost an addiction,” says Buls. He once photographed with an old camera that still came from the Second World War. He stopped with it, but eventually bought a digital camera. “A cheap thing. But people said I have talent. I photographed everything, but I like the weather. Especially thunderstorms and the northern lights.”

Buls has a special place between Sleen and Noord-Sleen. “It is there, you have the space there. I sometimes photograph with a drone, nobody is bothered by me. Moreover, it is dark at night, perfect for photographing stars and the northern lights.”

For the perfect photo, BULS keeps an eye on it again. “I look at radars and lightning detections all day long. Last Sunday I took a picture of a thunderstorm above North Sleen. It was a downburst, the rain came straight down. I had to move a few hundred meters and then it burst. You have to be lucky. That photo has been viral, he has already been viewed 50,000 times on my site.”

The weather photographer does that well. Just like his photos are shown on TV Drenthe or another channel. “Thousands of photos are sent in and if yours are selected, then that is special. It is a bit of a competition between weather photographers.”
