Paola Perego and kidney cancer

The image of a hospital room and a few words: «I thank Prof. Gallucci and his team who subjected me to partial nephrectomy for a neoplasm». So in January Paola Perego revealed via Instagram that she had undergone surgery for a tumor. A shared place for a very specific reason: invite prevention. “It can save your life” he wrote on Instagram.

The importance of prevention

«It wasn’t an easy time but now things are going well, I’m slowly recovering” says the Rai presenter very true. Reiterating that that post was born from the desire to remember how important prevention is. «Only by doing prevention did I discover that I had kidney cancer, otherwise I wouldn’t have noticed and it would probably get bigger. I think it’s important to remember that prevention can really save lives. I made this post because I felt I could share this message » she underlines.

«I feel privileged because I have the opportunity to carry out checks privately and therefore I manage to do my check up every year. So, eventually, when it happens and you’re lucky, you can get something in time. Unfortunately this is not luck for everyone: I believe instead There should be the possibility for everyone to do prevention» he adds.

How he found out he had cancer

The well-known TV face then explained that he discovered the cancer during a very normal check-up. “They saw something that wasn’t right with the kidney, they immediately did another test and the diagnosis was carcinoma” he says. «But me I didn’t understand right away. I understood this after the surgery. It is a strange thing. They are those things that when they happen you say: “It can happen to me too, they are not those things that can only happen to others”. I’ve spoken to other people who have had the same experience and they all think that in the end it can only happen to others and when it’s your turn it’s quite shocking.”

Fear and hope

When they told her the diagnosis Paola Perego was with my husband. «The strange thing is that I didn’t realize it right away. I went out with my friends, laughing, joking to exorcise. After the surgery, now, I’m processing the fact that I had cancer» he says again. Not hiding the fear of her that still accompanies her today: «It’s not easy. You think, “But if my body produces cancer cells, it can continue to do so.” But I’m lucky enough to have doctor friends from call”.

The presenter had part of her kidney removed because the carcinoma “was small and limited”. Before the operation, she had told her children that she “was a benign cyst”. And today, less than a month after the operation, my priorities and vision of life have changed. «I distanced myself a lot from social media. I wasn’t so passionate before, but now I find it so futile,” she says. Not only. Today he has to live with follow-ups, analyses, and with «a fear that you didn’t have before, the fear that he might have returned». But she doesn’t lack courage, positivity and hope.
