A recent study from Johns Hopkins University reveals that isoflavones derived from legumes can significantly reduce inflammation in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This highlights the increasing importance of nutrition in the management of COPD.

Study Findings

The research led by Belz et al. focused on 99 former smokers diagnosed with COPD. On average, the participants were 66.4 years old and exhibited moderate lung function impairment, with a forced expiratory volume (FEV1) of 49.8 percent.

The study found that an increase in isoflavone intake by one standard deviation resulted in a 7.4 percent decrease in the urinary inflammation marker 11-Dehydro-Thromboxan B2. Isoflavones are particularly abundant in soy products and other legumes. These findings were published in the journal Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases: Journal of the COPD Foundation.

Improving Symptoms, Not Lung Function

Chronic inflammation in the body can affect not only lung health but also lead to persistent fatigue and joint pain. Patients reported noticeable improvements in their symptoms, with higher isoflavone levels correlating with better scores on the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) and the Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ). Specifically, improvements were evident in coughing scores and mucus expectoration.

However, the researchers found no significant effects on overall lung function or the frequency of exacerbations. Experts warn against uncontrolled supplementation, emphasizing that the beneficial effects were observed only with natural dietary sources.

New Treatments for Asthma and Pulmonary Fibrosis

In addition to nutritional research, significant advancements are being made in medication development. A team from the University of Bonn and the Borstel Research Center discovered a new mechanism to combat allergic asthma. The synthetic peptide Pep19-2.5 (Aspidasept) inhibits the NLRP3 inflammasome, reducing excessive inflammation and improving lung function in laboratory and mouse models.

Further hope arises for patients with pulmonary fibrosis; the EU Commission has approved Nerandomilast (Jascayd), an oral PDE4B inhibitor from Boehringer Ingelheim. This drug aims to slow the decline of lung function in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and represents the first new therapy option in Europe in over a decade.
