Alexander Ovechkin is the sole record goal scorer in the North American professional league NHL.
In the game at the New York Islanders, the Russian ice hockey star from the Washington Capitals scored the 895th goal of his career on Sunday, leaving the big Wayne Gretzky behind. The 64-year-old Canadian had scored 894 goals in his NHL career.
Ovechkin, 2018 Stanley Cup winner with the caps, had equated with Gretzky on Friday with a double pack in 5: 3 against the Chicago Blackhawks, now the 39-year-old went past “The Great One”. For Ovechkin it was the 42nd goal of the season, he scored the 1-2 (28th) in the power play.
Gretzky had booked 894 goals in 1487 missions, Ovechkin also needed 1487 to replace him at the top. With the points, however, Gretzky is still clearly ahead, he has collected a total of 2857, Ovechkin is at 1617 according to the record goal.
Gretzky’s record once seemed unreachable, but Ovechkin had already said a few years ago that he wanted to achieve the historical record.
The striker has been playing for the Capitals since 2004, at that time the franchise had selected the Russians in the draft. Gretzky ran in his career for the Edmonton Oilers, the Los Angeles Kings, the St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers. In 1999 he ended his career.
