“In practice, this means that we train together with ships from other NATO countries for maritime combat missions in all dimensions and in a fleet context: maritime air defense, anti-submarine warfare, eliminating enemy ships, etc.,” said the commander of the Leopold I, frigate captain Jan Gacas, in a Defense press release.
The frigate will be part of the permanent NATO fleet SNMG1. The Leopold I must ensure a “credible maritime presence in strategic maritime areas, conduct maritime surveillance and protect key sea routes, strengthen operational cooperation between allied navies and ensure a high level of readiness at sea,” it said.
250th anniversary of the United States
The Leopold I will also participate in various international activities such as Operation Brilliant Shield, a joint defense exercise. The frigate is also present at the Sail4th Fleet Parade in New York, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Defense notes that the navy is active on several fronts at the same time. For example, the mine hunter Primula has left for a NATO mission in international waters and is part of NATO’s permanent mine countermeasures fleet in the Mediterranean. This deployment is due to the changing security situation in and around the Strait of Hormuz. The Primula can also be used there if necessary.
