More than 1,500 seagull nests have been counted in Groot Ostend. The sea birds come out of the egg in June, then live as chick for weeks on their nesting places between roofs and chimneys. But in mid -July they come in the most dangerous period of their lives. When it is hot, the chance of jumping down too early. Claude Velter, Vogelopvangcentrum: “Then the roof covering can easily rise to 60 degrees. And with their legs on it, they don’t like to do that. Then they jump down. They parachute, but are not yet powerful enough to fly away again. That is the problem.”
