The singer passed away due to an illness in her home in Milan: it is estimated that in her career she sold over 65 million records
The world of music mourns Ornella Vanoni. The singer, 91 years old, passed away due to cardiac arrest in her home in Milan. An icon of Italian pop music, in his career he has collaborated with numerous artists from Gino Paoli (with whom he had a great love story sealed by the song “Senza fine”) to Paolo Conte, Lucio Dalla and Fabrizio De André. He participated in the Sanremo Festival eight times, the last in the competition in 2018, before returning as a guest in 2023: in 1968 he came close to winning with “Casa bianca”, which placed second. In 1999 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the city of Sanremo, while in 1981 she became the first woman awarded the Tenco Award, reserved for Italian songwriting. “I’m not afraid of death – he said in a recent interview -. I believe I will understand when the time comes to leave, when I will be useless to life and life will be useless to me”.

Born in Milan in 1934, daughter of a pharmaceutical industrialist, Ornella Vanoni made her debut with Giorgio Strehler in the 1950s at the Piccolo Teatro with “Canzoni della mala”, then in 1958 she became the first woman to record a 45 rpm with the newly formed Ricordi. Among his greatest successes are songs that have marked the history of Italian music such as “La musica è finite”, “Abbracciami forte” and “Tomorrow is another day”. Since the 70s it had also become famous abroad. In his almost 70-year career he has recorded more than 50 albums and sold around 65 million records.

The condolences of the entertainment world are unanimous. On the social accounts of ‘Che tempo che fa’, the program in which he had often participated in recent times, we read: “Thank you for everything you gave us Ornella, we will always keep it in our hearts”. Fabio Fazio is incredulous: “I’m speechless and I wasn’t ready for all this.” “My beloved treasure” is instead the greeting of her friend Luciana Littizzetto, while Enrico Mentana limits himself to a “Goodbye, queen”. On Instagram, Alba Parietti remembers her with a smile: “Ornella, indomitable, it’s hard to believe because you always joked about it.” The Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli instead speaks of “one of the most original and refined artists in the history of Italy”.
