The Dutch hockey players have conquered the European title for the fifth time in a row on Sunday afternoon. The team of national coach Raoul Ehren from Den Bosch triumphed 2-1 in Mönchengladbach of host country Germany.
The Netherlands opened the score early in the competition. Pien Dicke tapped the ball up close. In the third minute of the second quarter, Luna Fokke worked a shot by Xan de Waard in the goal of Germany. The German Lisa Nolte made the 2-1 out of a penalty corner in the 35th minute.
At the time of the 2-1, Germany had a player more on the field, because the Gemondse goal machine Yibbi Jansen was a time penalty. Shortly thereafter the roles were reversed when the German Sara Strauss had to go to the side for ten minutes after a serious violation for the last part of the third quarter.
The Netherlands did not benefit from the numerical majority. In the last quarter, the Netherlands again had another player on the field for five minutes, but both teams no longer scored.
Raoul Ehren is happy that with the gold at the European Hockey Championships in Germany his list of medals is complete. The national coach of the hockey players was previously second and third with Belgium. “This is my first gold medal. I am very happy with that,” De Bosschenaar told the NOS after the Netherlands.
Ehren is happy that the Netherlands has prolonged the European title. “It didn’t always go smoothly. I’m glad we just grab him. And it is right too,” said the national coach after the 2-1 victory in Mönchengladbach.
The women did what the men did not succeed in on Saturday. The hockey players, trained by Jeroen Delmée from Boxtel, lost after shoot-outs from Germany with 4-1.
