Orange crowd in Zandvoort cheers: Max Verstappen wins soaking wet GP

Max Verstappen has won again in Zandvoort. After a chaotic and wet GP, the Dutchman was the fastest. Verstappen won for the ninth race in a row (an improvement on Sebastien Vettel’s record), he was also fastest at Zandvoort for the third consecutive time.

Saturday’s qualifying allowed Max Verstappen to start from pole position. He kept that lead for the first few laps, until it started to rain. The driver decided to switch to rain tires and fell back to ninth place. Teammate Sergio Pérez took over the lead in the race.

Verstappen was not deterred and crept closer and closer to Pérez. The precipitation stopped, so the Dutchman decided to exchange his rain tires again. Mexican Pérez went to the pit lane a lap later and Verstappen took advantage of that by taking 1st place again.

The American Logan Sargeant lost grip over his car and ended up in the gravel trap against the wall. A yellow flag and a safety car followed and all drivers were close together again. His wreck had to disappear from the track and after a few laps the race could be resumed. Verstappen simply kept driving at the front and his lead grew with the lap. Charles Leclerc had to retire early because he had suffered damage earlier in the race.

Venom in the tail

The venom was clearly in the tail at the Zandvoort GP. The rain changed the whole picture and the race was temporarily neutralized with a red flag.

It took more than 45 minutes before the drivers were allowed to race again. The safety car drove for the race cars for the first two laps, after which the spectacle started again. Verstappen didn’t give it away anymore and won the GP.
