I read on one of the last summer evenings The desire to the West from Cees Nooteboom. When I end up in the chapter ‘New York, city of the disappearance’, my thoughts go out to the attack on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. Suddenly I sit upright when I read: “Shining, they stand there on the river, those two towers, everything destroyed to an old -fashioned world and yet somehow fragile, sighs.” Nooteboom wrote this in 1985.
