After years, my daughter (9) discovered yesterday that ‘it was sunny’ is not a common expression. “It’s not Dutch,” someone had said to her. She beamed this morning when a classmate approved, saying it’s a simple way of saying the sun is shining. “Sometimes a new expression appears in the dictionary,” I told her, “and often it appears first in the newspaper.”
