THEVienna Tourism Authority and theEuropean Space Agency (ESA)in collaboration with the Wiener Symphoniker orchestra directed by Petr Popelka, they broadcast the masterpiece of Johann Strauss II, “On the beautiful blue Danube” in the form of electromagnetic waves at the speed of light from the Space antenna DSA 2 of ESA A Cebrerosin Spain. The concert was held on May 31 at 20:30 at Mak – Museum of Applied Arts of Viennawith the live broadcast of the Waltz, successfully launched in space at 9.30 pm. The signal reached the NASA Voyager 1 spatial probe just 23 hours later, Sunday 1 June at 20:30 CET (14:30 EST).

A waltz to remedy the cosmic forgetfulness of 1977

The mission “Waltz Into Space” filled a historic gap: the waltz on the beautiful blue Danube – considered theOffices of space thanks to Stanley Kubrick’s film “2001: Odyssey in space” – was in fact not included on the Golden Record Voyager when it was launched in space in 1977.
