After tough negotiations, RB Leipzig and Werder Bremen agreed on the change of coach Ole Werner. As the Saxons announced on Tuesday afternoon, the 37-year-old signs on the Cottaweg until 2027.
This was preceded by a day-to-day transfer poker between the two Bundesliga competitors. It is unclear which sum was reached, but it is certainly in the seven -digit range.
“Ole is a young, aspiring and extremely ambitious head coach who will take the next step in his development with us. We have long followed his way and is very happy that he chose RB Leipzig,” Marcel Schäfer, Managing Director Sport at the Red Bullen, was cited in a club message.
Werner, whose election is said to have supported Red Bull football chief Jürgen Klopp, “for a clear game philosophy, which he successfully brought to the pitch at his stations in Kiel and Bremen: structured ball possession football, quickly switching after the ball gain, a very good pressing, tactical flexibility as well as brave, committed and combative appearance.”
The new hope of hope, who will soon be officially presented at a press conference, brings his assistants Patrick Kohlmann and Tom Cichon from Bremen.
Werner had been released in Bremen at the end of May after announcing that he did not want to extend his contract in 2026. The Hanseatic League already committed Horst Steffen as a new coach at the end of May.
In Leipzig, Werner, in turn, succeeds Zsolt Löw, who had taken over from Marco Rose in the season end phase and actually acts as a “Head of Soccer Development” at RB.
Werner full of anticipation – and with lots of work
Werner also had their say in the official announcement of his change.
“I am very happy to be head coach from RB Leipzig from now on. In the very detailed conversations, it was immediately noticeable that there would be the same ideas about game and working methods on both sides. It made it easy for me to choose this way,” revealed the trainer, who praised the club for his “brave and offensive playing style with recognition value”.
Werner, who was not the first choice of those responsible, expects a lot of work on the Cottaweg: he does not have to create the realignment of the team, but also create the return to the top group of the Bundesliga after missing European business. Leipzig had missed international business for the first time since the Bundesliga promotion.
