The transfer market database is enriched by another milestone: The 1996/97 season of the Oberliga Südwest is now available with all detailed information. Master became the second team of the 1st FC Kaiserslautern with a clear lead over the surprise team SC Idar-Oberstein, which was found in the lower table in the previous season.
The “red devils” played, among others, Cem Karaca, Marco Reich and Pascal Ojigwe, who later made the leap into the professional area. The team also included the current professional trainer Sascha Hildmann and Rüdiger Ziehl. Antônio da Silva (SF Eisbachtal) and Carsten Birk (SSV Überherrn), who were later active for Borussia Dortmund and Greuther Fürth, also took their first steps.
With Borussia Neunkirchen and TuS Koblenz, the Oberliga participant also included two clubs with a past in the first and second Bundesliga. Both ended the season in midfield.
The performance of Jörg Becher from the bottom of the table SG Betzdorf is remarkable, because the striker became top scorer with 19 goals and was therefore more successful than the 14-time Bundesliga player Stefan Ertl. Cup was responsible for 45 percent of the relegation gates.
