In contrast to Jonas Hector and Timo Horn, Ellyes Skhiri was not officially dismissed in the last Bundesliga game against FC Bayern (1:2), but his stay at 1. FC Köln was still considered almost impossible. As expected, the official announcement followed on Thursday: the 28-year-old Tunisian will leave the Bundesliga club after four years.
Skhiri came to Cologne from HSC Montpellier for 6 million euros in the summer of 2019 and has played 133 games since then, scoring 20 goals and eight assists. With a market value of 13 million euros, the Bundesliga club loses its most valuable player on a free transfer.

Coach Steffen Baumgart still thought Skhiri’s extension was possible in February and announced “that we’ve already given up fighting for him.” A month later, managing director Christian Keller had made clear defensive tones. It is still unclear where the central midfielder will go. RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer 04 Leverkusen are among the interested parties from the Bundesliga, as well as the two Europa League finalists FC Sevilla and AS Roma from abroad.
