Now officially
Lars Stindl will leave Borussia Mönchengladbach on a free transfer after a total of eight years. The 34-year-old offensive player and captain confirmed this on his club’s social channels. Stindl, who was born in Speyer (Rhineland-Palatinate), switched from Hannover 96 to the “Fohlen” in 2016 for 3 million euros and has since played 264 games for the Bundesliga club, in which he scored 80 goals and 61 assists.
“I’ve thought a lot about it over the last few weeks and have decided to go back to my home country. This was always the original plan, but this incredible club with all its people, employees, my teammates over the years and above all this incredible positive encouragement from all Borussia fans, plus the fact that we feel at home on the Lower Rhine, have it brought everything to a halt. Nevertheless, I believe that the time will soon come for something new in my life,” said Stindl about his decision.

The time at Borussia was “the best of my life” for Stindl, “and I will never forget that at this club. I am incredibly grateful to all these great people I was able to meet around the club and our place of residence over the past eight years, as well as all the Borussia fans. That’s why it’s important to do everything again over the next few weeks, because the last impression remains.” The ex-national player left open where he is going. Second division club Karlsruher SC is a possible target.
After the end at Gladbach: Stindl back to his training club KSC?
The KSC sports manager Oliver Kreuzer, who has since been released, confirmed at the end of March that he was in contact with Stindl. “We are basically interested,” said Kreuzer of the newspaper “Badische Latest News”. According to reports, the trend in the past few weeks and months has developed more and more in the direction of the KSC. At his training club, Stindl made the leap to professionalism in 2007 and played a total of 59 games for Baden, in which he contributed 22 goals.

Gladbach’s sporting director Roland Virkus explained: “In the trusting and intensive discussions with Lars, we quickly realized that he was not making a purely sporting decision. So it was clear that such a deserving player should be given as much time as possible. Lars has now made a decision that we totally respect but also regret. At some point there will be melancholy, but for now we will concentrate on the joint tasks that still lie ahead.”
