RRome, 9 Oct. (askanews) – The conference “Obesity is a disease” was held today at Palazzo Baldassini in Rome, organized by the Italian Federation of Obesity Associations (FIAO) to delve deeper into the regulatory innovations introduced by the Pella Law, approved last October 1st by the Senate, in a shared debate with patient associations, clinicians and institutions. The Minister of Health, Orazio Schillaci, also participated in the conference organized by the FIAO, who underlined the social and clinical value of the Pella Law, focusing in particular on the need to guarantee equal dignity to people with obesity.

Since the drafting phase of the law, the FIAO has worked alongside the institutions to have obesity recognized as a progressive and relapsing disease. The President of the Italian Federation of Obesity Associations, Iris Zani, spoke on the topic: “We are very satisfied with the approval of the Pella Law. It is an important starting point, through this legislation the message must pass that obesity is a disease in all respects and that the patient is not the only one responsible for his condition. It is necessary to work on the awareness of people with obesity who, from now on, can ask for help in a concrete way. Following the approval of the Pella Law we will work on inclusion in the LEAs and on the approval of the National Chronic Disease Plan”.

Furthermore, the Pella Law is the first law in the world on obesity. An important record for the Italian legal system and for the protagonists who made legislation on the topic possible. The Hon. Roberto Pella, the first signatory of the law, made the following statements: “The law, first of all, recognizes obesity as a disease. This honors the institutions and the country: we are the first nation to equip itself with a regulatory instrument on the topic, it is a concrete and innovative law that concretely responds to the needs of people with obesity, but also to the issue of prevention. To arrive at the Pella law we worked and shared this commitment with the world academic, scientific, but also with institutions and regions”.

The conference organized by the FIAO therefore highlighted the social and clinical value of the Pella Law and, in particular, the need to guarantee equal dignity to people with obesity.
