Nursing home calls in a detective agency and makes a shocking discovery: ‘Had an acquaintance’ | Home

The money flew out of their wallets, but the elderly residents of a nursing home in Hellevoetsluis could not tell their children where it had gone. Security cameras did come up with an answer: the money was stolen. By a staff member.

The now 46-year-old employee of the facility service from Rotterdam struck at least seven times in the Careyn nursing home Rozenhoek in Nieuwenhoorn, Hellevoets. He took from just as many residents amounts ranging from 50 to 160 euros. He also took jewelry from one of the rooms that he later offered for sale. He also stole food from the warehouse of the nursing home.

Relatives of residents called the management when they noticed that money was missing from their wallets. Careyn engaged a private detective agency that installed cameras. They registered that the employee of the household service stole money. The man would have stated to the police that he was pressured by an acquaintance to steal money from residents.

Long ago

The thefts date from December 2016 and January 2017. The suspect will appear in court this week. Lawyer Jaap Spigt, who assists the man, explains why his client is only now having to account for himself from the Public Prosecution Service.

“The case would first go to court, but was dropped in 2018 because the facts were too long ago. Careyn disagreed and started an Article 12 procedure to enforce prosecution. The court upheld that. The strange thing is that the Public Prosecution Service now wants the case to be heard at the multiple chamber of the court (with three judges, ed.). I don’t think it’s worth it.”
