NPO is missing out on tons due to meager viewing figures for the Dutch national team

The NPO is missing out on tons due to the disappointing viewing figures of the Dutch national team at the World Cup in Qatar, says viewing figure expert and former SBS boss Tina Nijkamp. “It’s really not going well.”

Tina Nijkamp, the best-known viewing figure connoisseur in the country, closely follows the number of TV viewers of the Orange matches at the controversial Football World Cup in Qatar. The scores are quite disappointing compared to previous tournaments, including yesterday’s: the Netherlands – Qatar attracted 3.8 million viewers to NPO 1 from four o’clock in the afternoon.

‘Jeeminee!’

The Orange match, which scored no less than 86 percent market share due to the early broadcast time, is therefore yet another setback. Tina: “Oops. This is really not going well technically. ‘Only’ 3.8 million viewers for the Dutch national team. That’s really scary. Jeeminee. Not even 4 million viewers like the previous two games.”

She continues: “The Netherlands – Qatar will go down in the books as the linear worst watched match at a World Cup or European Championship tournament this century, or maybe even ever. The early time of 4 p.m. doesn’t help, that it’s a normal Tuesday, that it’s Sinterklaas time, that many people are watching on their laptop or via the app. But still.”

Tons of loss

Despite all those circumstances, according to Tina, the score is ‘really low’. “The people of the STER will also have to look three times: the commercials will have been sold to at least 5 million viewers, I suspect. One commercial costs 42,830 euros around the group matches of the Dutch national team.”

Those commercials retroactively generate much less income, says Tina. “So what does the STAR lose? I suspect that this competition has yielded around 200 to 250 thousand euros less. Fortunately, now the knockout phase, so then the Netherlands – United States will exceed 5 million on Saturday at 4 p.m.?”

World Cup wins prime time

The Football World Cup was also the prime-time winner yesterday with 1.9 million viewers (34 percent) for the Iran – United States match. The number two on prime time was De Oranjewinter with 828 thousand viewers (19 percent) on SBS 6.

Furthermore, NPO 1’s Opsporing Requested (692 thousand and 13 percent), RTL 4’s Bureau Arnhem (668 thousand and 12 percent) and SBS 6’s Urk! (608 thousand and 11 percent) the most popular.
