Nowhere in the Netherlands has the number of traffic accidents increased so sharply in a year as in Brabant. In 2020 there were slightly more than 14,000 accidents in our province and that number rose to 17,000 traffic accidents in 2021. That is an increase of 19 percent, calculated the comparison site Independer based on data from the police and Rijkswaterstaat.
Geertruidenberg has the dubious honor of being at the top of the list of biggest climbers. There were almost sixty percent more accidents there last year than the year before. This puts the municipality in first place nationally.
The top five municipalities in Brabant with the strongest increase:
- Geertruidenberg: 58.8% more traffic accidents
- Dongen 51.7% more traffic accidents
- Oisterwijk: 49% more traffic accidents
- Geldrop-Mierlo: 48.7% more traffic accidents
- Nuenen approx.: 41% more traffic accidents
The number of accidents on the road did not rise everywhere in Brabant. Waalre saw the sharpest decline. There were more than 22 percent fewer traffic accidents there last year than in 2020.
