At the Bambi awards on Thursday evening (November 14th), Thomas Gottschalk was only supposed to hand over the “Legends” Bambi to Cher.

Instead, the former Wetten, that…? presenter gave a lengthy speech that had remarkably little to do with the excellent musician who so often sat on his show couch. Worse, he even caused the audience to whistle with some crude lines (“Here she is, the only woman I’ve taken seriously in my life”).

At the request of “Spiegel”, Gottschalk himself commented on the embarrassing performance, in which he even explained, completely unnecessarily, how he supposedly remembered the name of the honoree (“Cher, Cher, nothing is as difficult as Cher”).

Was it a mix-up?

He explained that he was “really confused” at the moment when the musician was on stage and at the same time a second person came from behind. He thought it was a joke or a mix-up. Gottschalk: “I suddenly thought (when one Cher was on stage and the other came from behind) of a loading and was really confused (for the first time on a public stage) and then said really stupid stuff.”

The entertainer, who would soon be retiring from television, had previously met actress Sophie Berner, who had previously appeared at the event in a Cher costume.

Gottschalk also described his comment on the topic of “taking women seriously” as a mistake and expressly apologized for it. The moderator added that he takes women very seriously. “No one knows that better than mine.” His wife Karina accompanied him to the Bambi awards and saw the unfortunate appearance in the audience.

However, the 75-year-old did not mention in his apology message that Cher was actually the one who was duped despite all the confusion and reacted very confidently.
