Aleksander Barkov was chosen as the athlete of the year in 2024. Barkov’s selection was announced at the Sports Gala by the President of the Republic, Alexander Stubb.

The 29-year-old Barkov captained the Florida Panthers to the Stanley Cup champion last June. In addition, Tampere has been among the world’s elite centers for years.

– Yes, this choice means a lot to me. I was born and raised in Finland and have always followed Finnish athletes of various sports. I always wanted to be at the top in my sport, Barkov puts his words to Iltalehte.

– I know how many great athletes we have. I am really grateful and taken with the choice. It means a lot to me, says the puck player from his home in Florida.

The first puck player

A small addition to Barkov’s selection comes from the fact that the Tappara-raised player is the first ice hockey player to have the honor of being chosen Sportsman of the Year.

– Yes, it is a small additional source of pride. We have had so many amazing hockey players in Finland, and still have. I got to be the first hockey player in this matter, that’s a big deal for me too.

Barkov also played tennis when he was young, but admits that his childhood and youth were very “hockey oriented”.

It is understandable, because the player’s father, Aleksander Barkov senior, was also a professional hockey player.
