In Bologna, before the meeting between Italy and Austria, the death of Nikola Pilic was commemorated. The Croat died last September at the age of 86 and was an important figure in international tennis after his active career. For example, he served as a mentor to Djokovic, who recently called him his ‘tennis father’.

He also made waves as Davis Cup captain, as he is the only one who has managed to win the tournament as leader of three different countries: Germany (three times), Croatia (once) and Serbia (once). Thus, special space was made for a tribute at the Davis Cup meeting in Bologna. Not only Djokovic was there, Boris Becker was also present, as were other former top players Ivan Ljubicic and Viktor Troicki.

Words Novak Djokovic

“There is no better place than the Davis Cup to continue the legacy of Niki to celebrate,” said Djokovic, who won the prestigious national tournament with Pilic in 2010. “What Niki has achieved in the Davis Cup is something incredible that will probably never be repeated.”

“Niki was more than a coach to me,” Djokovic continued. “He was part of my family and without him I wouldn’t be who I am today. That’s why I tell you: thank you very much, Niki.”
