The Norwegian Frederik Moeller won the Super-G in Bormio. In addition, four Swiss made it into the top six.

After Alexis Monney’s victory in the downhill on Saturday, Sunday also had a surprise in store on the Stelvio in Bormio. This time the surprise winner was Frederik Moeller. Alexis Monney finished third with starting number 27. Vincent Kriechmayr from Austria came second.

Moeller celebrates the first World Cup victory of his career

The 24-year-old Moeller was fastest, especially in the last part of the piste, and with start number four set a time of 1:29.22 minutes in the snow, which no one could beat. For Moeller it was the first World Cup victory of his career.

He had already shown his potential at the Super-G in Val Gardena and in Beaver Creek with fourth place in each. The 20th on Saturday’s descent got along much better this time on the Stelvio and secured victory ahead of the Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr (+0.20 seconds) and Alexis Monney from Switzerland (+0.24 seconds).

Odermatt not on the podium again

Marco Odermatt narrowly missed the podium (+0.45 seconds). The winner of Bormio last year made a serious mistake on the Carcentina, which he was unable to compensate for even with his courageous drive in the final part. “I completely missed the entrance to Carcentina, had a very, very deep line and then you lose too much time“, this winter’s leader analyzed his ride on ZDF.

In the end, last winter’s overall World Cup winner came fifth behind his compatriot Stefan Rogentin – the same result as in the downhill yesterday, but given the accidents in Bormio, that was of secondary importance: “If you see this week and leave Bormio healthy, priority number one has already been fulfilled.” With Franjo von Allmen in sixth place, a Swiss also appeared behind Odermatt in the ranking.

Jocher due to injury not at the start – Baumann collects points

The German drivers had nothing to do with the top positions. Also because Simon Jocher couldn’t start due to injury. The Bavarian, who surprisingly finished 13th in the downhill race on Saturday, suffered a bruised heel during this trip.

Romed Baumann started the race as the first German who missed the top 40 in the downhill on Saturday and also couldn’t cope with the Super-G. Baumann showed a safety drive, but still missed the line a few times. In the end it was still an improvement compared to the downhill. He finished 24th, 2.29 seconds behind the leader.

Young hopeful Luis Vogt was too committed and was eliminated after the first intermediate time. Maximilian Schwarz finished 38th in his Super-G debut (+4.22 seconds).

Starting runner Caviezel falls badly

The Super-G was also marred by a serious fall. Gino Caviezel started the race first and was unable to finish. The Swiss fell on the infamous San Pietro jump and immediately grabbed his leg. The 32-year-old had to be rescued by helicopter. The race was interrupted for more than a quarter of an hour.

Initial investigations show a shoulder dislocation, which has been reinstated, and a complex knee injury, which is still being investigated“, said the Swiss-Ski association on Sunday evening. The association did not provide any information about the downtime or a possible operation.

The Frenchman Cyprien Sarrazin had already fallen badly during training on Friday. Pietro Zazzi from Italy also had an accident on his home track and suffered a broken tibia and fibula.
