American scientists Mary Brunkow and Fred Ramsdell and the Japanese researcher Shimon Sakaguchi share the Nobel Prize in Medicine this year. They have done research into so -called peripheral tolerance. It prevents the immune system from responding too fiercely to substances for which people are allergic, for example. An overreaction can be harmful to health.
