The Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl Lix with an outstanding performance 40:22 in the Superdome of New Orleans/Louisiana and thus prevented the historical threee-peat of the Kansas City Chiefs. The defensive line towered over while Patrick Mahomes delivered his worst game in the NFL.

Super Bowl Lix at a glance

  • The Eagles dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The defensive line in particular could not be kept and brought Mahomes to despair.
  • The chiefs needed until the end of the third quarter to create the way to the scoreboard at all and Mahomes made the worst game of his career.
  • The Eagles celebrated their second title of the Super Bowl era and thus prevented the historic threee peat of the chiefs.

Super Bowl Lix: The analysis

The story of this super bowl is quickly told. The Eagles dominated this game at the line of scrimmage right from the start. And basically on both fronts, even if the chiefs managed to curb the run of the Eagles at least in the first half.

After two columns on both sides – Patrick Mahomes almost threw an interception at 3rd down – the Eagles put the first good drive. After Deep Ball, he ended on Jahan Dotson, who was stopped at 1, as usual: Jalen Hurts scored the touchdown by Brotherly Shove. A little later Hurts then threw an interception from 30 to 2 to Bryan Cook after a 3-and-out of the chiefs because he was hectic under pressure.

The Eagles got the ball back after another 3-and-out and came to a field goal from 48 yards. Shortly afterwards it got really loud in the superdome, because Rookie-Cornerback Cooper Dejean caught an interception against Mahomes and turned it into a 38-yard return touchdown to 17: 0. Mahomes previously collected two sacks and then lost the overview of the Scramble.

The Eagles then even increased the lead before the break to 24: 0 with a 12-yard touchdown pass on AJ Brown, after Zack Baun was pushed in another interception against Mahomes, the Left Tackle Joe Thuny from Jalen Carter,, pushed in. Deep in the Chiefs half caught.

Chiefs only wake up in the garbage time

After the break, the Protection of the Chiefs still did not work, while the Eagles marched, took time from the clock and came to a short field of Jake Elliott. As a result, the chiefs lost in a failed fourth attempt – Avonte Maddox, who stepped in for the stricken Dejean, broke the passport again – again fired the ball and Hurts fired a 46 -yard touchdown pass on Devonta Smith in the end zone: 0 shortly before the end of the third quarter!

The chiefs subsequently prevented the shutout through a 24-yard touchdown pass, but they didn’t have much more to offer. Mahomes lost a fumble and Elliott even sank a 50-yard field goal. Then the chiefs only operated cosmetics of results.

For the Eagles, it is the second super bowl success in franchise history and the successful revenge for the defeat in Super Bowl LVII against the Eagles and their ex-coach Andy Reid.

Super Bowl Lix: The most important statistics

  • Saquon Barkley already had the old Scrimmage Yards season record (including playoffs) by Terrell Davis from the 1998 (2762 yds) season before the break. Barkley ended the season with 2857 scrimmage of Yards. In addition, he is now the first running back ever to run for more than 2500 rushing yards throughout the season.
  • Due to his touchdown in the first quarter, Hurts is now the first quarterback in the NFL story with at least 10 rushing touchdowns in the playoffs. He also caught up with John Elway for most rushing touchdowns of a quarterback in the Super Bowl (4).
  • Dejean is the first player in the NFL story to achieve a touchdown in the Super Bowl on his birthday. He turned 22 on Sunday.
  • Smith is the first player at the University of Alabama to score only one point in the Super Bowl with his touchdown.

The star of the game: Josh Sweat (Edge Rusher, Eagles)

The key was to pull Patrick Mahomes the tooth. The defensive line of the Eagles made this with emphasis and without the help of lightning. Sweat was the outstanding man and led his team with 8 pressures and 3 sacks. Hurts (293 Total Yards, 3 Total Touchdowns, Int) was then chosen for the MVP of the Super Bowl.

The flop of the game: Patrick Mahomes (quarterback, chiefs)

His offensive line was completely overwhelmed. But even if Mahomes once had open receivers and could have made something possible, he was mostly inaccurate or overlooked his teammates. That may have been the weakest game in the successful career of Mahomes. He also received 6 sacks in one game for the first time. And with that the chiefs had no chance.

Analysis: Chiefs vs. Eagles – that was tactical

  • The Eagles defense only rely on its 4-man rush in the Rush pass-they didn’t flash-and managed to keep Mahomes largely in the pocket and penetrate him. The offensive line was not a match and in one of the sacks in the first half, Kelce was also no help against sweat as an additional blocker.
  • As usual, the Eagles played zone behind it, with Quinyon Mitchell consistently glued to his opponent, while over the middle of Kelce mostly in Double coverage from Baun and a safe. In general, the Eagles stopped the game and allowed almost no deep balls.
  • The chiefs, in turn, usually only flashed at 3rd down and in obvious Passing Downs, while at 1st Down they frequently entered base at the beginning to get Barkley and the run game under control. Without flashing, however, they had little access to Hurts in the Rush Pass against the dominant offensive line of the Eagles.
