No book, but a green solar car at the opening of the Children’s Book Week in Ter Borch

How do you get kids excited about sustainability? Teacher Mellanie Demkes of OBS Ter Borch had an idea. She invited her sister’s team, which is working on a solar car for a race in Australia. The start of the Children’s Book Week turned out to be the perfect occasion to station the fossil-free vehicle at the primary school.

A team member of Top Dutch Solar Team puts the yell in. “Okay guys, he’s coming….”

“GI-GA…GREEN!”, group 6 of OBS Ter Borch shouts back. The theme of the Children’s Book Week is rubbed into the pupils of the school with enthusiasm. The children marvel at the technical feat of the bright green solar car.

“I’ve heard a lot of questions, so I assume that the children will find it interesting,” concludes Loeka Demkes. As a communication student she became involved in the Solar Challenge in which her team participates. The car that can be seen in Ter Borch today, drove earlier in Morocco. “And now we are preparing for a race in Australia. From the most northerly to the most southerly point.”

When sister Mellanie asked her to visit the school in Ter Borch in North Drenthe, she really couldn’t refuse. “And I thought it was quite a good idea. It also fits well together, because our theme is the same as that of the Children’s Book Week: ‘Gi-Ga-Green’. And our slogan is ‘Gi-Ga-Green’, our yell is ‘Gi-Ga-Green’. Everything is Gi-Ga-Green,” she concludes.
