From today, BOAs and the police are actively checking for drinking alcohol in the center of Meppel. You can still have a beer or wine in the pub or on a terrace, but no longer on the street, squares or benches in and around the city center.
Due to the action of the enforcers, the municipality of Meppel hopes to reduce annoying situations while going out. Do you still walk on the street with an open bottle or can of alcohol? Then a fine of 110 euros threatens.
According to Mayor Arjen Maathuis, there has always been a ban for drinking alcohol on the street. However, it was not yet sufficiently maintained and therefore the rules have been tightened. In the past period, Meppelers have already been warned that public drinking is not allowed.
The mayor announced that he had sufficient capacity to maintain. “That will succeed. In Meppel we already have the most police deployment during going out. We are prepared for this.”
Figures show that most problems with drinks occur in the Meppeler center and at the station. Maathuis: “There are the entertainment venues in the center and people travel from the station.”
In the future, camera surveillance in those areas is an extra option, the mayor said earlier this year. “I think it is necessary, but in the end the city council will decide on that.”
Burgemeester Maathuis told about the alcohol ban earlier this year:
