Karim Adeyemi remains in the Borussia Dortmund squad despite a penalty notice for illegal possession of weapons. The offensive player does not have to fear any sporting consequences because coach Niko Kovač has supported his protégé.
The penalty order against Adeyemi, which includes a fine of 60 daily rates, has been legally binding since October 30th. However, the incident only recently came to light when Adeyemi was with the national team. He explained that at the beginning of 2024 he ordered a “mystery box” online that contained items not permitted under weapons law. Months later, this package ended up unopened at the police station, Adeyemi said on Instagram.
After speaking to Adeyemi, Kovač decided not to exclude him from the team. The coach emphasized that everyone makes mistakes in life and it is important to classify them correctly. “There is no reason for me to banish him for the next few weeks,” said Kovač. The focus is now on the Bundesliga and Adeyemi continues to receive support.
In addition to his sporting role, Adeyemi will be involved in a social project in Dortmund’s Nordstadt. This measure was decided in consultation with DFB sports director Rudi Völler and BVB managing director Lars Ricken in order to give the player an opportunity to make amends. Despite the incident, Kovač wants the team to concentrate on the upcoming game against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday (from 3:30 p.m. in the t-online live ticker). BVB has recently lost four times in a row against the Swabians.
