Nick Cave names controversial Marilyn Monroe biography his favorite movie of all time

Fans can ask questions to Nick Cave under the “Ask a Question” tab on Nick Cave’s The Red Hand Files website, named after his song “Red Right Hand.” Cave’s answers then appear publicly on the home page.

A user by the name of Sourav asked Cave in October what his favorite movie of all time was. Nick Cave responded with the documentary Blonde, due out on Netflix on September 28, 2022, which follows the life of Marilyn Monroe, played by Ana de Armas. Directed by Andrew Dominik.

The film adaptation is based on the novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates (2000), which tells the story of Monroe’s life on and off the stage.

The soundtrack to the film by Warren Ellis and Nick Cave

Nick Cave composed the soundtrack to “Blonde”, his “favourite film of all time”, together with Warren Ellis.

Criticism of the Netflix film about Marilyn Monroe

Since its release, the Netflix film has been criticized for aggressive, horror-like scenes and the subliminal anti-abortion statement. Our columnist Paula Irmschler is not enthusiastic about “Blonde” either, because the film almost exclusively shows Monroe’s suffering and thus indirectly abuses her.

Other music and film projects by Warren Ellis and Nick Cave

Cave and director Dominik have already worked together in the past on the making of the documentary “One More Time with Feeling”. The film follows the creation process of Cave’s band Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds’ 16th album SKELETON TREE.

This year, Cave also composed the film score for La panthère des neiges (2022), a documentary about the rare snow leopard, with Warren Ellis, and the music for the Netflix series Dahmer Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Ellis and Cave are also playing a tour of Australia together through the end of 2022.

Cave’s solo album SEVEN PSALMS was released on July 1st, 2022:
