In football it is often the goalkeepers who are said to have a very special magic and madness. They are also (in this case!) at the back. They are also essentially responsible for quick actions from the backcourt.

In popular music, many drummers enjoy a similar status. Rhythm bolzers, elegant “cats”, “bass drum bulldogs” or other references to crass movements from the animal world are also welcome here.

Now a documentary entitled “Let There Be Drums!” is dedicated to the rhythm generators. He shows interviews with Ringo Starr, Stewart Copeland from The Police and Chilli Pepper shooting budist Chad Smith. A unique feature is the last (so far known) film interview with Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.

Directed by filmmaker Justin Kreutzmann, the son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann, he has known his father’s arm and footwork since he was a kid. Of course, Dad plays an important role in the documentary.

The Drummer saga hits theaters in the US on October 28 and can also be seen on Prime Video and Apple TV+. A DVD is also on the way.

With “Let There Be Drums!”, son Justin goes in search of the answer to epochal questions such as “Are drummers born like this or do they become like this? “Does the urge to create rhythm and be an integral part of the band come from within – or is it learned?”

There are answers to this from many qualified mouths. The question of how music is passed on from generation to generation is also given a lot of room. The aforementioned heroes on the drums are joined in “Let There Be Drums!” by Mickey Hart (The Grateful Dead), Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), Matt Sorum (Guns N’ Roses), Tré Cool (Green Day) or Adrian Young (No Doubt).
