One day after parting ways with long-time coach Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots have already found a successor in Jerod Mayo. The new coach will be introduced in a press conference on Wednesday (January 17, 2024).

The 37-year-old played for the team from Foxborough, Massachusetts, from 2008 to 2015 and won the Super Bowl with the Patriots as a linebacker in 2014. Mayo has been part of Belichick’s coaching staff for two years. New England and the 71-year-old successful coach announced on Thursday (January 11, 2024) that they were going their separate ways.

Crash in the post-Brady era

Belichick won the Super Bowl six times with the Patriots, making him the most successful coach in NFL history. But since the departure of star quarterback Tom Brady in 2020, things no longer went as planned and a sporting decline followed. In the current season, the Patriots only won four of 17 games and clearly missed the playoffs with their worst record since 1992.
