After London and Marseille, Kanye West is also coming under pressure in Italy: politicians and unions are demanding that the Hellwat Festival appearance be canceled.
In the recent past, Kanye West has primarily drawn attention to himself with fascist and anti-Semitic statements. With tweets like “I am a Nazi,” he fell out of favor with the general public and sparked heated debates. After the controversy surrounding him became quiet, the musician aimed for a big live comeback with a concert run through Europe and Great Britain in the summer of 2026. However, the echo of his statements hit him hard. The Wireless Festival in London has already been canceled due to Ye’s planned headline show; In the end, a concert by him in Marseille also did not take place. Now he is under pressure about another festival.
Hellwat Festival: With or without Ye or what?
On July 18, 2026, Kanye West was scheduled to perform at Italy’s Hellwat Festival at the RCF Arena in Reggio Emilia. The event takes place over several weekends in July and presents a line-up from the genres of rap, pop and electronic. There is now headwind against Ye’s planned appearance, which is also of a political nature. The city’s Jewish community, anti-fascist resistance groups, trade unions and politicians are demanding that the US rapper’s show be canceled.
The reactions to the planned Italian appearance are identical to those that resulted from the shows in England and France. It is therefore obvious that the next cancellation could follow soon.
Political voices against Kanye West
Pina Picierno, Vice-President of the European Parliament and member of the Italian Democratic Party, suggested that the government intervene, as in England and France, and prevent the upcoming gigs.
“The UK refused the visa. France effectively prevented the concert in Marseille,” she told local newspaper La Gazzetta di Reggio. “Italy, on the other hand, stands idly by with 68,000 tickets sold as if nothing had happened.”
The representative of the Italian Trade Union Confederation in Emilia-Romagna, Rosamaria Papaleo, also expressed her anger: “It seems quite contradictory that an artist known for his anti-Semitic statements should be allowed to be a guest in our city, which has always strongly supported anti-fascist values. For us, anti-fascism is not a whim, but a value rooted in our history,” she told CBS News.
The union also contacted the mayor of Reggio Emilia, Marco Massari, asking him to get Kanye West to meet with the city’s Jewish community. The politician “distanced” himself from the artist, but announced that a final decision about whether the show would take place rested with the Italian government.
Festival defends booking
While the critical voices are becoming louder and louder, the Hellwat Festival is defending its planned collaboration with the Grammy award winner. Director Victor Yari Milani called the event a “space for free artistic development.” In an official statement, he added: “The artist’s previous comments have undoubtedly provoked a justifiable reaction, but we should also not forget that Ye formally apologized in January via the Wall Street Journal and stated that he is neither a Nazi nor an anti-Semite, but suffers from bipolar disorder.”
What happens to the headliner spot?
The event will take place from July 4th to 18th, 2026. The “I wonder” artist was scheduled to headline the last date. In addition to him, other headliners such as Travis Scott and Martin Garrix will be there. One might therefore think that the festival could cope with the loss of a main act. The catch, however, is that the different headliners are each scheduled for their own date during the duration of the event.
What will happen on July 18, 2026 remains unclear. In view of the growing criticism, there is still no statement from the organizers or the rapper that would imply a cancellation of the appearance or a replacement of the headliner spot. It is also completely unclear whether the example of the Wireless Festival will be followed and the last day of the series will be canceled completely. It remains to be seen whether any consequences will be drawn from the initiatives against the concert.
