A good two weeks before the Berlin elections, the CDU secured first place in the polls.
In a survey published on Thursday by the opinion research institute Civey for “Spiegel” and “Tagesspiegel”, the CDU came to 23 percent, followed by the SPD of Prime Minister Franziska Giffey and the Greens with 19 percent each. The left accounts for 12 percent, the AfD 11 and the FDP 7 percent. 9 percent of respondents would vote for other parties.
If the poll results were also the election result, the current coalition of SPD, Greens and Left could continue. However, other tripartite alliances led by the CDU would also be mathematically possible. The party with top candidate Kai Wegner had recently been ahead in other polls with 22 or 23 percent. Whether Wegner will actually succeed in forging a government alliance in the event of an election victory remains to be seen.
In the House of Representatives elections on September 26, 2021, the SPD achieved 21.4 percent. The Greens were in second place with 18.9 percent, followed by the CDU with 18.0 percent. At that time, the left received 14.1 percent, the AfD 8.0 and the FDP 7.1 percent.
Because many problems and mistakes arose during the election, the Berlin Constitutional Court ordered a complete repeat of the Berlin elections, which will take place on February 12.
