New sports director: Eberl introduces himself to FC Bayern: “I’m not a savior”

As of: February 27, 2024 12:07 p.m

Max Eberl has long been considered the ideal candidate for the position of sports director at FC Bayern Munich. When he introduced himself, the native of Lower Bavaria radiated confidence. Even the long to-do list doesn’t shock him.

Max Eberl has arrived at the club he loves. The native of Lower Bavaria made this impression during his performance on Tuesday (February 27, 2024) in the catacombs of the Munich Arena. “It is a great pleasure for me to return after 30 years,” beamed Eberl on the podium. The record champions’ management team was also visibly satisfied with the commitment. The East Frisian CEO, Jan-Christian Dreesen, greeted us with a somewhat awkward “Welcome home, Max.”

Eberl “the right person”

The search for a successor to Hasan Salihamidzic took a long time after his resignation in May last year. They wanted to have “the right person for this position,” explained President Herbert Hainer. After Eberl’s exit in Leipzig, it quickly became clear that he was the right person. He agreed in December “after a relatively short period of consideration” and is aware of the size and difficulty of the task. “It’s a great legacy that I can take on.”

Eberl is looking for “suitable players and suitable coaches”

The to-do list for Eberl is long. A new coach will be needed by summer at the latest. There is a change in the squad. His list is “only DIN A 5, but there are challenges,” said Eberl on Tuesday. Coach and squad are very connected, Eberl knows. “We have to find the right coach for Bayern Munich and the right players. “This should happen as quickly as possible”.

When planning the squad, attention will be paid to “sustainability” and “recognizability for the fans,” promised the 50-year-old and also took the current squad to task: “We will look at who will join us in the next three months (…). .”

Eberl is “not afraid” of the Herculean task

Sounds like a Herculean task for the former Gladbach and Leipzig player, but he also has deep stakes. “I’m not a savior. I’m someone who can work very well in a team. (…) I need the expertise of the people around me.” Nevertheless, he is “not afraid” of the task and has even more ambitions for the current season. “I’m here to collect titles.” In the remaining three months of the season, it’s important to “get the best out of it,” said Eberl. Then, “maybe I’ll win a title too – you don’t know.”
