New queer club Raum is not allowed to open this weekend after all: “We are devastated”

Nightclub Raum was supposed to open its doors this coming weekend, but did not receive the necessary permits from the municipality in time. The long-awaited opening of the club, near Sloterdijk station, therefore has to be postponed.

According to the initiators, the club is ‘safe and ready’, but… The Nieuw-West district has failed to grant the permits on time. “We are devastated to announce that Raum will not be allowed to open this weekend,” the club said on Instagram. “This decision hits us to our core.”

Final advice

The municipality says that it is still awaiting final advice from the fire brigade and police. “The initiators have been applying for a permit for some time now. The municipality is carefully going through this process. This is necessary because it concerns matters such as safety and fire safety,” said a spokesperson for cultural councilor Touria Meliani.

The spokesperson emphasizes that the city council is very enthusiastic about the arrival of club Raum, because it offers space for night culture, and specifically for the queer community. “At the same time, the place where they want to open is complex, between companies in the Port Area where more parties than just the municipality have a say over the activities that take place there, such as the province of North Holland and the Port Authority.”

According to the spokesperson, the municipality is working hard to issue the permits quickly. “But unfortunately that won’t be possible before next weekend.”
