The New York Jets will have a new starting quarterback in Week 12 of the NFL. As head coach Robert Saleh announced on Monday, Tim Boyle will replace current starter Zach Wilson on Black Friday against the Miami Dolphins.
After the Jets offense again declared bankruptcy in the 6:32 defeat at the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Saleh left it open whether he would now carry out a quarterback swap. Wilson was replaced by Boyle in the third quarter of the game in Orchard Park/New York after Saleh expressed his confidence in him during the week.
Saleh explained that he wanted to give Boyle, a “different type of quarterback,” a chance “to see if we can do something with the offense.”
Saleh went a step further on Monday, declaring that against Miami Wilson would be just the No. 3 guy behind Boyle and backup Trevor Siemian. This leaves Wilson only in the role of emergency QB, who can only be used if the other two are injured.
Zach Wilson: Second overall pick in 2021
Wilson was the second overall pick in the Jets’ 2021 draft, but hasn’t made a breakthrough in the NFL since then. On the contrary. Nobody with at least 500 pass attempts since his NFL debut has, among other things, a lower passer rating (71.9) than Wilson, who was actually intended as a backup behind Aaron Rodgers this season after two years as an unsuccessful starter. However, he tore his Achilles tendon in the fourth game of the season and has been out ever since.
Boyle, in turn, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from the Green Bay Packers in 2019 and has only made three starts since then, all of which came in 2021 with the Detroit Lions. In 2022 he was in the Chicago Bears squad and was used as a substitute. In 18 total appearances, he threw for 607 yards, three touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Boyle’s starting debut for the Jets will take place next Friday in the first Black Friday game in NFL history against the Miami Dolphins (live on NITRO from 9 p.m.).
