Prince and Netflix’s estate administrators talked about a new “mutual agreement” and talked about the cancellation of a long -awaited documentary about the deceased music legend.

On Friday (February 7th), a changed partnership with Netflix was announced on social media. This will enable “to develop and produce a new documentation with exclusive content from the Prince archive”. How this documentation is designed was not communicated.

Ezra Edelman’s work and its reception

But one thing is certain: the explanation also confirmed the final end for the documentary that Ezra Edelman had worked for for more than four years. Edelman became known for his participation in the documentary “OJ: Made in America”.

But he was not the first to try a documentary about Prince. Before that, Ava Duvernay worked on it. However, Edelman’s work was not satisfactory on the part of the estate administrator. Last summer (July 2024) Edelman’s first version was blocked after several disputes with those responsible (Rolling Stone reported). Prince ‘estate administrator stated that the first version contained dramatic factual inaccuracies and sensational representations of certain events from his life. But not only the Prince team was outraged by Ezra Edelman’s work: In addition to a documentary, the contract also included a six-hour series. Apparently Edelman gave up nine hours, which he was already in a contractual manner.

What happened after Prince ‘death

Prince died of an overdose fentanyl in 2016. Since he did not have a will, six inheritance were given to his estate in equal parts. A long legal dispute followed.

In 2024 Prince posthumously was included in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, with his sister Sharon Nelson received the award in his name. The ceremony took place on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the performance of its film “Purple Rain”.
