The central government uses the services of banks for its payment transactions. The Ministry of Finance recently conducted a tender for the payment transactions of the Tax Authorities, Benefits and Customs Service. This resulted in two banks: Rabobank and ING Bank.

What is special about this tender is that the contract was awarded in two parts. From May 1, 2026, Rabobank will handle payment transactions for the Tax Authorities and Benefits Department. ING Bank will be the executor of Customs payment transactions from May 1, 2026. Splitting up the services has important advantages. Both banks act as standbys for each other. This means that both banks can take over each other’s services if necessary or desirable. This may be necessary, for example, in exceptional cases in the event of a prolonged IT failure at the bank.

Nothing will change until May 1, 2026. The Tax Authorities and Benefits Department communicate in advance active about the change of bank and what this means for citizens, companies and other stakeholders. This will take place before and after the announced switch of bank.

The payment transactions of the Tax Authorities, Benefits and Customs Service are extensive. This payment transaction includes, for example, the payment of benefits and the collection of taxes. This service is periodically re-tendered.
