After protests by the RBB staff representatives, the scandal broadcaster increased the number of director applicants for Jan Weyrauch from three to four.

Weyrauch (55) is currently program director at Radio Bremen. Right from the start, he had the best references of all the candidates – but he didn’t want to accept the lower future RBB boss salary in advance. The search committee therefore removed him from the list. On Wednesday, Weyrauch explained that he still wants to run for office.

RBB interim boss Katrin Vernau collects 315,000 euros per year, Berlin’s state audit office recommends only a senator’s salary (177,000 euros) for the chief post. Weihrauch received 214,511.74 euros from Radio Bremen in 2021.

According to BZ information, the responsible RBB board of directors is said to have agreed on an amount of 220,000 to 240,000 euros. Because the salaries of the other ARD directors are significantly higher – and the RBB directors already earn 200,000 euros – they are subordinate to the director.

On Thursday, the four candidates will present themselves to the RBB Broadcasting Council, which will elect the new broadcaster chief for the next five years on June 16.
