Sandro Wagner was introduced as the new head coach of FC Augsburg. Julian Nagelsmann’s former assistant coach delivered calendar sayings, promised motivation and even made a laugh with a swipe against Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Sandro Wagner had some of a motivated Feel-Good coach in his imagination as a new head coach. Brightly white teeth, shiny hair, perfectly fitting side parting – and then the sentence that he would “come to work every day with a smile on his face”. A breeze modesty: “I am a learner, very humble and see the FCA as an incredible opportunity.”

And so the 37-year-old was humble, highly polished, with calendar sayings and full of enthusiasm new items as head coach of FC Augsburg.

Enthusiastic Wagner: “Fixed from second one”

Previously, Wagner had been the right hand of national coach Julian Nagelsmann. “Active football is my DNA,” emphasized Wagner when asked what he can bring to his new club. Managing Director Michael Ströll lit him in an “incredible” first conversation “from second one,” said Wagner, “I noticed: someone was in the mood to get to know me. After this conversation it was clear to me: I would like to go to FCA!”

In any case, he does not want a headless “shower forward”, as he says: “It doesn’t have to be nice to go to Augsburg – and sometimes hurt.” It is about “not having the opponent’s book dictated”.

Much praise of Managing Director Floodplain

In any case, he already seems to have convinced the club officials with his kind: “Sandro is a person who is highly motivated who is very ambitious who gets to work meticulously, a human catcher”, for example, managing director Michael Ströll, the new FCA coach.

Wagner has “a clear plan, a clear game idea to actively play football – all attributes that coincide with our goals”.

Wagner has to get used to media hustle and bustle

Ströll emphasized that he wanted to “tidy up” with the idea that Wagner was mainly brought to catch more attention. “The beam effects were totally uninteresting for us, completely irrelevant.” The Bundesliga club committed Wagner “because he fits a hundred percent in a sporting profile”.

Wagner first has to get used to the media hustle and bustle: “Who am I not coached on the sidelines. (…) So I hope that it will accept normality again. And can then go back on vacation or can go back to the home office again.”

Side against Bastian Schweinsteiger

In keeping with the gray-mouse image that is attached to the FCA, Wagner replied when asked whether he feels pressure: “I already have gray hair a bit, a little early with 37. I just hope that I am not completely white at the end of the season-like Schwei,” and laughed. After all, his former teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger is already completely gray.
