Union St. Gilloise experiences his very first game in the premier class – and can cheer directly. A top club, on the other hand, has long difficulties
The Champions League season 2025/26 has its first little sensation right from the start: Debütant Union St. Gilloise won his first game in the premier class at the Dutch champion PSV Eindhoven 3: 1 (2: 0). The Belgian champion, which had won the title for the first time in 90 years, caught a measure of measure and took the lead through a penalty from Promise David Früh (9th).
Before the break, Anouar Ait El Hadj increased with a solo from the center line to 2: 0 (39.). Kevin Mac Allister (81st) made the decision. Ruben van Bommel designed the result for the hosts a little friendlier (90th).
The English football runner-up FC Arsenal, however, started the Champions League without international Kai Havertz with a sovereign victory. The semi -finalist of the pre -season prevailed 2-0 (0-0) at Athletic Bilbao after a long time disappointing performance in the strong final phase. Only seconds after his substitution, Gabriel Martinelli scored the leadership (72nd), and the second Joker Leandro Trossard also met (87th).
With the “Gunners”, who achieved three victories in the first four games in the Premier League, Havertz was missing due to a knee injury. Athletic had to do without his also injured EM star Nico Williams.
Arsenal came into play against the tactically disciplined Basques. It was only in the 26th minute that Viktor Gyökeres had the first chance with a flight headball. Bilbao needed until shortly before half -time before Álex Berenguer first appeared dangerously in front of the London goal (43.). The level remained manageable even after the break.
