Negative series ended: VfL Osnabrück beats Rot-Weiss Essen

After six games without a win, VfL Osnabrück celebrated a win again in the third division. There was a 1-0 (1-0) against newly promoted Rot-Weiss Essen on Friday evening.

In the first home game under new coach Tobias Schweinsteiger, the hosts immediately took the initiative. Osnabrück was optically superior, but there weren’t any clear chances in the first half hour. Too many actions lacked overview and sophistication.

It only became dangerous in the 33rd minute when Robert Tesche steered the ball onto goal after a free kick and forced RWE goalkeeper Jakob Golz to make a strong save. A little later, however, the ball was in the goal: Essen’s defense was not up to par, Ba-Muaka Simakla, who had been so strong in the past few weeks, scored with a direct acceptance from six meters (35th).

Lots of struggle and few chances

Essen now had to change their relatively defensive orientation – and this was good for the game. The pace picked up after the change of sides. Osnabrück had the opportunity to make it 2-0 when Maxwell Gyamfi failed to give the ball a crucial change of direction in the six-yard box (49′).

So it was exciting and intense. However, there were no highlights or other good chances. Nevertheless, the Osnabrück fans were satisfied: after a long dry spell, they were finally able to celebrate three points again.
